Party time!

(he must have known it wasn't his real birthday - not a single bite of cake was eaten!)

Thank you for joining us this month! Back to our regular spotty posting!

Well, geez

It was a good run, but I missed posting yesterday. Too tired, I suppose, after making a 6-hour turned 8-hour trip with a grumpy little boy.

Today I did a few party preparations, like mini caramel apples

Sunbutter and jelly bat-wiches

and cupcakes. No, they are not these cupcakes. We had some -- issues. {Ahem}

Tomorrow is the day!

Link

Here's Hank in his *real* Halloween costume, as Link

Despite a long tradition of creating costumes for myself that try to get every detail just right, now I am more inspired to create representational costumes. To me these are costumes that are mostly thrown together from what you have, and therefore you have to make do. Also, making kid's costumes from real clothes gives you a better shot of them staying on a little longer on Halloween (understanding of course that the hat is a no go after about 5 minutes).

From the top - Hat is handmade from felt. Turtleneck is a hand-me-down from Hank's cousin. Thrifted green polo shirt turned tunic (in the past I would have made this element from felt, but the large polo works just fine). Two of mama's belts were used to make a bandolier and a utility belt. The ocarina was a splurge at $6, but I figured this is quintessential Link, and therefore was a necessity. Instead of the white tights Link wears, Hank is wearing some tan knit pants we already had. He is wearing these booties, but since he is more mobile now (almost walking!), he will probably have to wear his regular (unmatching) shoes on Halloween. Bent sword from dollar store. Felt shield handmade. Total cost for thrifted polo shirt, ocarina, and sword: $10.

As previously mentioned, most people think he is Peter Pan. I'm ok with that. Just hope people notice all the work that went into that damn shield. It even has felt rivets.

(Update: Full lederhosen shot added to this post)

Meme me

My "big project" for Hank's party...is not going to get done. I'm ok with that - really. Fine.

Just for the record, it was going to be a photo printed fabric bunting of him wearing all of these disguises. The first fatal flaw was the fact that my son cannot sit still, does not "do" hats, and every picture was a blur, which I'm sure would look worse on fabric. Then, we don't have a printer set up here at home. I know - it's 2009. My grandma has a printer for crying out loud. Finally, I had plans for embellishing the bunting with regular fabric, ribbon etc. Too many steps for a maxed out mama. Did I mention I threw my back out last week (wah), and I am making 6 different dishes for an office party tomorrow (sadly gone are the days of buying an El Pollo Loco family meal)?

{breathe}

Fortunately there is always plenty on the internet to brighten one's day. Like imagining an internet meme costume for myself. I would be Keyboard Cat. Although apparently the real keyboard cat is wearing a baby t-shirt (I always thought it was a kimono), I don't think one would need to go that far to complete the costume. A baby blue t-shirt should suffice. An adult onesie? Creeeeepy!

Working on: Let's see - Chinese chicken salad, green salad with pomegranate seeds and goat cheese, baked mac n cheese with butternut squash (from this month's Parents magazine), roasted root veggies, apple crisp, and whole wheat rolls. Cheater cheater pumpkin eater

So this is a lame post, so far as posting every day goes (a post for the sake of posting). I don't even have any Favorites to give you today.

We were supposed to go to the Aquarium today for their Halloween event, but granny here threw her back out last night. Although I was semi-mobile, BT would not be seen in public with me given the way I was walking. So, all I can offer is a picture from our last visit to the Aquarium. Also a great shot of Hank's mama done haircut.

Almost walking normally now, thanks.

Tunes

I don't have an exact playlist for the party, as that is BT's department, and I am pretty sure none exists to date.

It inevitably will include such classics as The Monster Mash, Purple People Eater, and bands such as Oingo Boingo and The Ghastly Ones. I will also be referring BT to this great list.

As we are approaching Hank's 1st birthday, some of you may be curious as to how we did with our no battery goal for year one. I think we did pretty well overall - with one exception. We ended up being gifted with 2 small toys that were attached to two playmats, a See and Say, and a t-shirt that makes a frog sound. No large noise-making toys (no exersaucers!), no monitor, and no batteries were used for our swing or other baby gear.

Then along came the Shaker. I can't remember now why we went this route versus having an MP3 player and speaker dock in his room. In any case, this is one of Hank's favorite "toys." He has learned how to turn it on and off, which of course does not mean turning it on for some time and then off when he is finished listening to it, but rather pushing the button over and over and over again. The player makes fun sounds when you turn it on or change songs, and has pretty good sound. And - it eats through batteries like crazy. They are just little AAAs, but still. I still feel pretty good about our battery usage, but know this keeps us from being able to call Hank a battery free baby...

Gallery space

This was a planned project for the nursery from the get go that took about - oh - 5 minutes to complete. Isn't that the way it goes sometimes?

The only benefit to waiting is that Hank now has his own artwork to hang from this display (it was originally intended for photos of his cousins). I love that they do these little art projects with him at school. As you can tell, he is very adept at feet art, and Rorschach inspired pieces.

This is probably in my top 5 of favorite pictures taken during Hank's first year. Hank was a little crabby, but there was only one teacher in the room at the time, and she was changing another baby. So, Hank crawled on over and fell asleep instantly on a pile of Boppy pillows. That day I went home and threw a selection of pillows around in his room, but have never observed the same result...

Put up, or shut up

*Fortunately* BT had never heard that canning is also referred to "putting up"

Otherwise he would have told me to (insert title of post here) about a dozen times as I hemmed and hawed this past weekend about what to do with the 2 dozen apples we had sitting on our counter.

Now that we have entered the late summer/early fall season, our CSA produce is prolific, and more items have the potential for being stored if one plans accordingly - and knows what the hell they are doing. I had canned a few items in the past with much guidance, but honestly this time around reading the directions for the entire process set my head spinning. Not to mention that I needed a solid block of time away from my little shadow.

Well, after telling myself to (insert title of post here), I decided to get to work. I wanted to make apple pie filling after reading this post. Again, indecision about not having the right equipment, not quite enough apples, not enough stamina - but I had to get it done. Here is the result (second row from the bottom)

What a funny little cabinet, you may be thinking. We have two of them, and as near as I can figure, they are made for canned items, as nothing else of importance will fit in the narrow space (though as you can see I try to store some vases and the like in here). I like to imagine a past owner of our tiny house telling his wife to (insert title of post here), and then saying See - I even made you a cabinet to store your damn jars, so quit yer bitchin'!

Part 1: For the kids

I have a few partial posts, so I guess I'll choose one and make it a two-parter (starting to feel the squeeze of posting every day)

BT found these mini Halloween comics at our local comic store to pass out to trick-or-treaters. We paid about $6 for 30, so totally on par price wise with a bag of Halloween candy or some cheapie toys. To be expected, the Star Wars one is pretty good, the Casper one is written for folks of a different generation, and the Domo one makes no sense whatsoever.

Swing by tomorrow to see how they will be given out to the kids. And no,they will not be presented with little bags and boards.

I'm a big boy now

After Hank rejected purees around 7 months, the food I was making for him was small chunks of individual meats, veggies, fruits, etc.

That was all fine and good for a few months (although it was a pain to cut everything up so small!), but now his tastes have matured (?) and he wants to eat more "sophisticated" foods - things that have different tastes all in one bite. He pretty much eats what we eat, even spicy food.

Breakfast has become a challenge, as he is no longer satisfied with a handful of Cheerios and a banana. Of course, I usually don't have time to make anything too elaborate in the morning, so I have been making some "healthy" baked goods and freezing them. Admittedly they could be even healthier, with the use of applesauce instead of sugar, for example, and I plan to work on that. The healthy part is the addition of veggies or fruit to the items I serve - pumpkin bread, carrot muffins, and yes, even zucchini pancakes. Other breakfast foods include yogurt, scrambled eggs, and oatmeal with blueberries.

Don't worry - I am totally prepared for when he rejects all of these healthy foods and decides he is only eating food that is white. Or that which is round.

Boo!

So we did leave a Boo! gift after all for one family in our neighborhood

I felt bad leaving just one, as the official poem says you are supposed to Boo two houses. Of course, since we are currently un-Booed, we could receive a Boo now, and have to do two more houses. What was I thinking?

The Skelanimals bag is from Target, and is free with the purchase of two bags of "ghoul mix" M&Ms. There is also a coupon on the bag for 50 cents off the M&Ms. At my Target, the bags were not anywhere near the M&Ms, so you may need to go hunt for one if you want to get the bag for free (I think you can buy it for $1.99 and not end up with 2 bags of M&Ms to guiltily devour on your own).

Sweets for the Sweets

The ubiquitous candy table

It seems every party has one these days. I have a lot of great jars and such that could have made this amazing, but this is a) for kids and b) at a park, teetering over a slab of pavement, so plastic fit the bill. The empty dishes and containers will be filled with chocolate/candy that I do not want to risk transporting through the desert.

So - the peanut butter kisses. Didn't you just gag when you received these trick-or-treating? Houses passing out peanut butter kisses were definitely put on the potential t.p. list. But now I realize how crazy cool they are, since they are Mary Janes in disguise.

Who do you want to be today?

I forgot to mention - although the general theme of Hank's party is Halloween, I wanted to gear the party towards the dress up aspect of the holiday

Kids are encouraged to wear their costumes, the favors are dress-up related, and there will be a dress-up bin to add to or enhance the costumes worn. Or for the adults to get in on the fun. Most of the items shown here are from the dreaded dollar store. But come on - a giant toothbrush? Does it get any better than that?

Frightfully good (and easy!) cupcakes

So here are the cupcakes I will be "making" for Hank's party

Since we will be arriving in Arizona the night before the party, any prep work needs to be very quick and easy. These cupcakes fit the bill, using store bought cupcakes with the addition of a few candy pieces. I decided to use candy melts for the eyes, as you only get a few white Necco wafers in a package, and really not a fan of them anyway.

For good Ghouls and Boys

Here are the little favor bags for Hank's cousins

For the boys - a disguise kit with wax moustache, nerd glasses, clown nose, and an Abba Zabba

For the girls - a princess kit with crown, wand, candy necklace, Ring Pop, and candy lipstick (girls are sweeter than boys, so they get more candy)

and for the babes, a "costume protector" aka bib

May need to think the display for the favors...hmmm.

And Spaceboy I've missed you*

As mentioned, I have many wee wonderfuls patterns on hand, most of which I have not tried.

The Spaceboy and Robot patterns were probably some of my faves, and I am surprised it has taken me this long to make something from this pattern set. This Spaceboy is for a neighbor boy's birthday next weekend (he loves space stuff). I'm sure with time it will become burdensome, but so far we are having fun with our new found responsibility to attend birthday parties for Hank's friends. In addition to some homemade gift ideas, I found a great local store with a selection of unique boy-friendly toys that around $10 for all tomorrow's parties.

I was at the same thrift store where I found this book, and they had put a few more books from the series out

(Humor - Will Rogers; Fairness - Nellie Bly; Patience - Wright Brothers; Curiosity - Christopher Columbus; Determination - Helen Keller)

and look what this vintage scout found for me

Cool books depicting boys interested in "honest man's work" (according to BT).

Caution: Wet Paint

When I started this month with the goal to blog every day, I thought I was so smart.

I thought I would get a few projects ahead of the game, and there would be no concern about having something blogworthy to post about every evening.

A few tired nights in a row, and I am already back to blogging about something I did the same day. Here is a hasty project that turned out pretty cute, though, imho. I took this silhouette of Hank and drew the basic outline freehand onto his pumpkin. I then filled it in with black paint. It took less than 10 minutes to complete! I need more 10 minute crafts!!

Tabletops

Although I think of myself as an eco minded person, one (I wish there was just one) area I fall short is making environmentally preferrable purchases for parties.

I typically start my shopping at the dollar store and load up on cheap disposables. I suppose the justification is that the event only happens once per year, so what's the big deal? Of course, people across the country are also celebrating events and throwing away all of their junk, too. So yeah - it is a big deal.

Well *some day* I'll throw a party that does not include any cheap China crap. This party will just have some environmental touches. Like making an everyday tablecloth more festive by adding felt embellisments, inspired by those sold on this inspirational eco friendly party supply site. Baby steps.
